Amber hurried along the wharf’s and piers, past barques, carracks, galliots, and galleons. It was, perhaps, her sense of absolute urgency and haste that prevented her from being detained by the mariners and dockworkers as she asked repeatedly for any news of either a tall grayhair or a stocky redbeard. At last a comprador directed her to a small ship called the Elgrane; it was, he said, making ready to sail.

When Amber saw the thief standing amidships, talking to the dark-haired woman, she was not sure what to do. She had still found no sign of Pandrogas, had no idea where he was. She knew she could do nothing against the thief by herself. But the sailors were already reefing lines and making ready to draw up the gangboard; in a few moments the Elgrane would weigh anchor. As she pondered, she glanced up again at the ship)—and saw the thief looking straight at her. Quickly she ducked behind a stack of cargo. She was not sure if she had been seen or not.

At any rate, she had done all she could, she told herself. It would be easy enough to learn the ship’s destination, and Pandrogas could no doubt contrive some method to meet it there. But first she would have to find the sorcerer. She turned to make her way back toward the cemetery—and gasped. The thief stood before her.
